On February 1st the Trump administration removed the PLACES project and data from the CDC website, and as of February 4th the data files are unavailable on CDC’s data portal. The PLACES project combines data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) with Census Bureau American Community Survey data, and supports multiple small geographies. I find it both a valuable teaching and research resource. I’m sure other researchers have local copies of PLACES data, but I’m posting mine here so that it is as widely available as possible while I determine a better way to share it. The csv data files are self-contained in that all the basic information needed to use it is contained in the rows themselves (a good precaution for these times). I may followup with an interactive map to replace the one that was also lost if no one gets to it first.
