The New York City Council recently proposed a bill asking the Department of Transportation to redesign its network of truck routes, citing safety as one reason. In light of this, I was interested in determining to what extent and how the local truck network is responsible for crashes involving pedestrians and cyclists in New York City. Below I share a part of an analysis and visualization of truck routes and safety which was the subject of a recent article in Streetsblog NYC. This portion of the analysis determines that 54.8% of fatal pedestrian and bicycle crashes from 2019 to 2022 occurred along the local truck route in the Bronx.
